Water Management Looks into a Bright Future

The 1st Austrian National Young Water Professionals Conference in Vienna demonstrated that IWA can boast a well-functioning promotional tool for young professionals

About one hundred ambitious young water professionals gathered at “Alte Schieberkammer” (the old surge chamber of the Vienna Waterworks that was converted into a function hall) in mid-June to attend the first Young Water Professionals Conference.

Hans Sailer, conference host and outgoing head of the Vienna Waterworks, said that the historical venue was a good choice as Vienna’s water utilities of the mid-19th century had confronted challenges similar to those in many of today’s booming mega-cities. Vienna had mastered these challenges in an excellent and trend-setting manner and was therefore a role model for such cities.

During the three-day event, which was held in English as the language of science, the young professionals were taught how to augment their networking skills, discussed the challenges of the future and practised their performance in front of an international audience. They received useful tips from reputed experts and were also given the opportunity to present themselves to companies and agencies (specifically to the conference sponsors) in a job exchange.
